Logline

When a disillusioned radio host unexpectedly connects with a vibrant, visually impaired visionary live on air, their powerful conversation ignites a nationwide movement, shattering societal barriers, advocating for mental well-being, and proving that true strength lies in embracing every voice.

Plot of the film

“Rabb Di Awaaz” plunges us into the vibrant yet isolating world of RJ Karan, a once-celebrated radio host grappling with a profound existential crisis. The airwaves, once his sanctuary, now echo his inner turmoil as he questions his purpose and feels increasingly disconnected from his audience and himself. His spark has dimmed, and the fear of fading relevance looms large.

Fate intervenes in the form of Shiv, a dynamic and articulate individual with visual impairment, who steps into Karan’s studio as an unexpected interview guest. Far from being defined by his lack of sight, Shiv possesses an extraordinary inner vision – a profound understanding of life’s intricacies, an unwavering resilience, and an infectious optimism. He carries within him a unique “voice of the soul” (“Rabb Di Awaaz”) that resonates with an uncanny clarity.

Their on-air encounter transcends a typical interview. Shiv’s insightful perspectives, delivered with disarming honesty and unexpected humor, pierce through Karan’s carefully constructed walls of cynicism. He doesn’t offer pity, but rather a powerful invitation to see the world – and himself – anew. Shiv’s life, rich with experience and unwavering determination, becomes a living testament to the untapped potential within everyone, regardless of perceived limitations.

As Karan and Shiv’s connection deepens, both on and off the air, their conversations become a catalyst for profound personal growth. Shiv’s unique way of navigating the world, his reliance on other senses, and his articulate understanding of societal barriers challenge Karan’s preconceived notions about ability and limitation. In turn, Karan’s platform, once a source of his anxiety, transforms into a powerful tool for amplifying Shiv’s inspiring message and the voices of countless others often relegated to the margins.

The radio show evolves into a beacon of inclusivity, attracting a diverse listenership eager for authentic connection and empowering stories. Shiv’s presence ignites a ripple effect, inspiring individuals facing their own challenges – be it mental health struggles, physical disabilities, or societal marginalization – to step into their own power and share their unique voices. Karan, revitalized by this newfound purpose, rediscovers his passion for radio, using his platform to actively dismantle stigma surrounding mental health and disability, advocating for accessibility, and celebrating the strength found in vulnerability.

“Rabb Di Awaaz” expands beyond the confines of the radio station, showcasing the burgeoning community that forms around Karan and Shiv’s message. We witness individuals with visual impairments thriving in unexpected fields, those battling mental health challenges finding solace and support, and societal barriers slowly beginning to crumble under the weight of empathy and understanding. The film culminates not in a simple resolution of Karan’s crisis, but in the powerful emergence of a collective voice – a harmonious chorus of diverse experiences that redefines strength, resilience, and the very essence of human potential.

Through Shiv, Karan learns that true vision isn’t limited to eyesight, but encompasses perspective, empathy, and the courage to embrace the richness of every human experience. “Rabb Di Awaaz” ultimately empowers audiences to recognize the inherent value in every voice, inspiring a world where inclusivity isn’t just a concept, but a vibrant and lived reality. The film leaves us with the resounding message that our collective strength lies not in our similarities, but in the beautiful symphony created by our diverse and empowered voices.

CBFC Meetings and aligning with RPWD Act 2016

The Central Board of Film Certification’s New Delhi Accessibility Conference addressed the implementation of accessibility standards in feature films, and Rabb Di Awaaz has been central to these discussions. The Delhi meeting occurred on August 28, 2024, followed by a Chandigarh meet on August 30, 2024. These events gathered film producers, directors, technology service providers, and disability advocacy representatives. Clips from the multi-inclusive film Rabb Di Awaaz, directed by Ojaswwee Sharma, were screened, showcasing practical inclusivity in filmmaking. Director Ojaswwee Sharma and the film are playing a key role in shaping new accessibility standards and inclusive practices in India Cinema.

The “Guidelines for Accessibility Standards in the Public Exhibition of Feature Films in Cinema Theatres for Persons with Hearing and Visual Impairment” were issued, aligning with the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (RPWD) Act 2016. This was done after consulting with the film industry, disability associations, and government bodies.

The RPWD Act, 2016, under Section 29 and Section 42, mandates universal access in information and communication, including films for those with hearing and visual disabilities. Sections 40 and 44 mandate accessibility norms in public buildings, following guidelines from the Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs.

These guidelines, dated 15th March, 2024 and issued by the Indian Ministry of Information & Broadcasting, lay down accessibility standards for films certified by the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) for public exhibition. The focus is on content, information, assistive devices, and support for persons with disabilities and their film-viewing experience. Notably, Rabb Di Awaaz had already secured certifications for its various prints before these guidelines were issued, demonstrating a proactive and pioneering approach to inclusive cinema.

Rabb Di Awaaz – A cinematic catalyst for Sustainable Development

In an era increasingly focused on holistic progress, the impact of creative endeavors extends beyond mere entertainment, often resonating with global agendas for a more equitable and sustainable future. This analysis delves into the profound contributions of the film “Rabb Di Awaaz” towards the realization of several United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Through its narrative, production practices, and outreach initiatives, “Rabb Di Awaaz” emerges not just as a compelling cinematic experience but as a tangible force for change, actively promoting good health and well-being (SDG-3), quality education (SDG-4), gender equality (SDG-5), decent work and economic growth (SDG-8), reduced inequalities (SDG-10), and fostering crucial partnerships for the goals (SDG-17). By examining the film’s specific alignments and impacts within each of these critical areas, this overview underscores the powerful potential of cinema to serve as a catalyst for advancing the global sustainable development agenda and fostering a more inclusive and just society.

UN SDG 2030 goals Description of Match or Alignment
SDG-3: Promoting Good Health and Well-being

SDG 3 aims to promote good health and well-being. It comprises 13 targets and 28 indicators designed to monitor progress toward ensuring healthy lives and promoting well-being for all at all ages.

“Rabb Di Awaaz” supports this goal by raising awareness about mental health and fostering conversations on emotional resilience. The film “Rabb Di Awaaz” aligns with Target 3.4, which focuses on “reducing premature mortality from non-communicable diseases (NCDs) through prevention and treatment and promoting mental health and well-being”. The central theme of the film is mental health. The film emphasizes the significance of mental and emotional well-being through its characters’ (RJ Karan) journeys. It delves into the idea of self-worth and existential crises faced by youth, even those who seem to “have it all.” It touches on the need for emotional support, counselling, and emphasizes that anyone might need help at any stage in life. RJ Karan’s vision and perspective changed because of Shiv in the film. Shiv’s ability to bring clarity, hope, and direction into Karan’s life reflects the film’s core message that perspectives are not just about eyesight but about understanding and purpose. Through its screenings in universities, NGOs, and rehabilitation centers, it creates a space for discussions on mental health, reducing stigma and encouraging inclusion.
SDG-4: Quality Education

SDG-4 Quality Education aims to “ensure inclusive and equitable education and promote lifelong learning opportunities for all”. This goal focuses on eliminating barriers to education and improving access to learning resources for all individuals, including marginalized groups such as persons with disabilities. It consists of 10 targets and 11 indicators addressing issues like primary education access, vocational training, gender equality in learning, and digital literacy.

“Rabb Di Awaaz” aligns with Target 4.4 of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), which aims to increase the number of youth and adults with relevant skills for employment, decent jobs, and entrepreneurship. Shiv’s character works as a legal advisor, showing that qualified and capable individuals with disabilities can contribute meaningfully to the workforce—purely based on merit. The film makes it clear that Shiv’s victory as a contestant wasn’t because of his disability or any form of sympathy but because of the genuine emotion, humor, and sensibility he brought to his conversations with RJ Karan. His authenticity resonated with the audience and left a lasting impact, teaching valuable life lessons along the way.

“Rabb Di Awaaz” has been screened free of cost, primarily in partnership with educational institutions, in more than 90% of cases. It became a tool for inclusive education, inspiring young minds and initiating dialogues on disability, inclusion, and innovation. The film has been used for research purposes by PhD scholars and shown to students in special schools for the visually impaired, hearing impaired, and those with intellectual disabilities. The story promotes inclusive learning environments and understanding among school children—supporting the broader goal of accessible and equitable quality education.

By presenting the film in engineering and innovation institutions like IISER Mohal (Punjab), Sankalchand Patel University (Gujarat), Kurukshetra University (Haryana), “Rabb Di Awaaz” has inspired students and researchers to develop accessible technology. This initiative encourages innovation that improves life for people with low vision and promotes affordable solutions in the Indian market.

SDG 5: Gender Equality

Sustainable Development Goal 5 (SDG 5): Gender Equality aims to achieve gender equality and empower all women and girls globally. Established by the United Nations in 2015, SDG 5 encompasses 9 targets and 14 indicators addressing various aspects of gender disparity.

“Rabb Di Awaaz” aligns particularly in its efforts to eliminate discrimination (Target 5.1), provide safe and respectful workplaces for women (Target 5.2), and ensure full participation in leadership and decision-making (Target 5.5). The film actively involves women with disabilities, highlighting their abilities and advocating for their inclusion in creative fields.

Under Target 5.1, which focuses on eliminating all forms of discrimination against women, Somya Thakur, Ms. India World Wheelchair, is a powerful example of how “Rabb Di Awaaz” fosters inclusivity and empowerment. Initially seen as a guest appearance in the film, she later emerged as a prominent figure, becoming the face of the Buddy Care National Campaign directed by Ojaswwee Sharma. It is a significant step toward representation and advocacy for individuals with disabilities.

Filmmaker Shri Ojaswwee Sharma played a crucial role in this transformation, ensuring that women with disabilities are not just passive observers but active contributors to social change. By featuring Somya in a lead role, he underscored the importance of breaking stereotypes, promoting inclusivity, and providing equal opportunities in the industry.

It also supports Target 5.2, which calls for the elimination of violence and exploitation of women, by advocating for safe and respectful workplaces. Filmmaker Shri Ojaswwee Sharma has emphasized the importance of security, respect, and equal treatment for women in his workplace, ensuring a positive and inclusive environment.

Additionally, “Rabb Di Awaaz” aligns with Target 5.5, which seeks to guarantee full participation in leadership and decision-making. By providing women equal opportunities in creative roles, production management, and decision-making within the film’s development, it strengthens gender representation in leadership positions within the industry. Shri Ojaswwee Sharma has not only challenged societal stereotypes but also emphasized the importance of equitable representation in cinema. This effort ensures women with disabilities are seen and celebrated in the workplace and beyond.

SDG 8: Decent Work and Economic Growth

SDG 8 aims to promote “inclusive and sustainable economic growth, productive employment, and decent work for all”. It includes 12 targets and 17 indicators, focusing on equal pay, safe working environments, youth employment, and full inclusion of persons with disabilities in the workforce.

“Rabb Di Awaaz” strongly aligns particularly with Target 8.5, “Achieving full and productive employment and equal pay for all, including persons with disabilities,” and Target 8.8, “Promoting safe and secure working environments for all workers, especially women and those in vulnerable conditions”.

In line with Target 8.5, “Rabb Di Awaaz” stands out as one of the rare films in which a 100% visually impaired person gets to perform in a medium that is fundamentally audio-visual. For Shiv Kumar Sharma, facing the camera, preparing for his role, understanding the dynamics of cinematography, participating in script readings, rehearsals, and the entire filming process, including principal photography, was a groundbreaking journey. His involvement didn’t end there. He was also part of the post-production process, including audio re-recording, and was deeply involved in ensuring the film passed all accessibility checks.

As an actor, it’s common to revisit and reflect on one’s performance during the dubbing stage. For Shiv, this process relied heavily on audio description. Since he couldn’t see the final visuals, each of his scenes had to be described to him. This allowed him to compare what he remembered performing with how the scene was ultimately portrayed. It was essential that the meaning of his performance was accurately captured through those descriptions. Experts like Amrinder Singh, who have vast experience with audio-described content, played a key role in verifying whether the emotional essence and storyline were effectively conveyed.

“Rabb Di Awaaz” also aligns with Target 8.8 of the Sustainable Development Goals. The Director, Ojaswwee Sharma, ensures the creation of a respectful and secure working environment, particularly for women and individuals with disabilities.

SDG 10: Reduced Inequalities

SDG 10 aims to reduce inequality within and among countries by promoting the social, economic, and political inclusion of all, regardless of age, gender, disability, race, or economic status. With 10 targets and 11 indicators, it focuses on ensuring equal opportunities, eliminating discriminatory practices, and supporting inclusive policies that uplift marginalized groups and foster fairness in society.

“Rabb Di Awaaz” aligns with Target 10.2, “Empower and promote the social, economic, and political inclusion of all, irrespective of disability or status,” and Target 10.3, “Ensure equal opportunity and reduce inequalities of outcome by eliminating discriminatory practices and promoting inclusive policies.”

Under Target 10.2, the film sets a powerful precedent for inclusive filmmaking by actively involving persons with disabilities both on-screen and behind the scenes. It provides a platform for marginalized voices and showcases their abilities, reinforcing the idea that inclusion must extend beyond tokenism into meaningful participation. It serves as a practical example of how cinema can implement inclusive values and contribute to reducing social and economic disparities.

In line with Target 10.3, the film integrates Indian Sign Language and audio descriptions, ensuring accessibility for individuals with hearing and visual impairments. These inclusive practices not only enhance the viewing experience for all audiences but also advocate for broader adoption of such measures in the media industry, thereby promoting equality and dignity for all individuals.

SDG 17: Partnerships for the Goals

SDG 17 focuses on partnerships for the Goals. Under Goal-17, it has a total of 19 Targets and 25 Indicators. These targets cover a wide range of areas including finance, technology, capacity-building, trade, systemic issues, and multi-stakeholder partnerships.

“Rabb Di Awaaz” embodies the essence of Target 17.H, which emphasizes fostering effective collaboration among public, private, and civil society sectors. The film’s production, distribution, and advocacy efforts involve partnerships with various organizations including educational institutions, NGOs, rehabilitation centers, media organizations, and disability rights groups. These partnerships ensured that the film reached diverse audiences and became a tool for training, research, and change, all while remaining freely accessible. “Rabb Di Awaaz” has successfully established a benchmark for using cinema as a tool for advancing sustainable development goals.
